Preparing for ARCHER2
We will be presenting two Virtual Tutorials this month which will provide invaluable assistance to all users in preparing for the move to the new machine:
Transferring Data from ARCHER at End of Service
Virtual Tutorial, RESCHEDULED Wednesday 29th January 14:00
Andy Turner and Caoimhin Laoide-Kemp, EPCC, The University of Edinburgh
The end of the ARCHER service is approaching and many users have large numbers of
files and/or volumes of data on the service which may need to be moved to alternative
locations before the end of service. Recently, we have updated the ARCHER Data Management
Guide with useful advice on transferring data between different sites and systems. In this
webinar, we will discuss the issues around data transfer, present practical advice to users
about data transfer and answer questions and concerns users may have on issues around data
management and transfer.
Cray Compilation Environment Update and modern Fortran
Virtual Tutorial, RESCHEDULED Wednesday 5th February 15:00
Harvey Richardson, CRAY
This webinar will outline some new developments in the Cray Programming Environment and
will then focus on presenting examples of the latest features from Fortran 2018 that are
supported by the Cray Fortran compiler. Note that these developments are not available
on ARCHER today but this webinar should prove useful to people who have access to other
Cray systems or who are planning to use the next national supercomputing service that will follow on from ARCHER.
Call for Proposals for HPC Compute Resources from DECI-16 (Tier-1)
http://www.prace-ri.eu/deci-16-call
The PRACE DECI programme provides cross-national access to European Tier-1 HPC resources (national systems). Access will be awarded for a period of 12 months, beginning 1 June 2020.
Resources are available on the following architectures: HP Cray XC40/Shasta, Intel and AMD clusters (various processor and memory configurations) and hybrid systems (clusters with GPGPU accelerators or Xeon Phi Co-processors (KNC)) made available from Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the UK.
For this call additional resources are available from the Fenix Research Infrastructure, funded by the European ICEI project (https://fenix-ri.eu/). Applicants need not specify a particular machine or architecture, but if they do, we will endeavour to take these preferences into account.
- Opening date: 16 December 2019, 12:00 UTC
- Closing date: 31 January 2020, 17:00 UTC
- Anticipated allocation decisions: May 2020
- Allocation start: 1 June 2020
- Allocation period: 1 year for Project Access
- Type of access: DECI (Tier-1)
Please see the above link for more information, or email deci-support@prace-ri.eu with any enquiries.
HPC-Europa3 Transnational Access programme
Collaborative research visits using High Performance Computing
Call for applications: next closing date 20th February 2020

Visits can be made to research institutes in Finland, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden or the UK.
UK-based researchers can benefit in two ways: either by visiting a research group elsewhere in Europe, or by hosting a research visitor from another country.
What does HPC-Europa3 provide?
- Funding for travel, living and accommodation expenses for visits of up to 13 weeks.
- Access to world-class High Performance Computing (HPC) facilities.
- Technical support to help you make best use of the HPC systems.
- Collaborative environment with an expert in your field of research.
Who can apply?
- Researchers of all levels, from postgraduate to full professors.
- Researchers from academia or industry.
- Researchers currently working in a European Union country or Associated State (see http://bit.ly/AssociatedStates for full list of Associated States).
- Researchers may not visit a group in the country where they currently work.
