ARCHER2 Software Packages in HPC with Spack and EasyBuild
Wednesday 17th June 2020 15:00 - 16:00 BST
William Lucas EPCC
Software packages on HPC systems have traditionally been built, installed and managed manually. In preparation for the launch of ARCHER2 we have investigated the Spack and EasyBuild package installation frameworks, tools which automate the potentially time-consuming process of correctly building and installing scientific software. Both perform the same high-level steps of obtaining source code, setting necessary build options and installing dependencies, but the difference in philosophy between the two approaches is otherwise quite substantial. In this presentation I will discuss the capabilities and basic usage of Spack and EasyBuild and where they are similar and where they differ in their approaches to managing software on HPC systems.
This online session is open to all.

HPC Carpentry
David Henty (EPCC), Juan Herrera (EPCC)
29 - 30 June 2020
This course introduces accessing remote advanced computing facilities via the command line and High Performance Computing (HPC). After completing this course, participants will:
- Understand motivations for using HPC in research.
- Understand how HPC systems are put together to achieve performance and how they differ from desktops/laptops.
- Know how to connect to remote HPC systems and transfer data.
- Be able to use the Bash command line on remote systems.
- Know how to use a scheduler to work on a shared system.
- Be able to use software modules to access different HPC software.
- Be able to work effectively on a remote shared resource.
Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this workshop.

ARCHER2 Embedded CSE (eCSE) call
We are very pleased to announce that the 1st ARCHER2 eCSE call (ARCHER2 eCSE01) is now open for proposals. The deadline for submitting documents for technical evaluations is 16 June 2020, with the final deadline for proposal submission being 7 July 2020.
Embedded CSE (eCSE) support provides funding to the ARCHER2 user community to develop software in a sustainable manner, to run on the ARCHER2 system. For this call, only software which results in research which is within the remit of EPSRC is eligible and funding for this call does not include software within the remit of NERC
More details of how to apply are available by following the link to the eCSE calls page from here
https://www.archer2.ac.uk/ecse/together with details of the application and review process, assessment criteria eligibility, etc. Please note that the process for applying for an eCSE project under ARCHER2 has been updated since ARCHER eCSE programme. More details available via the above link.
The 1st ARCHER2 eCSE call (eCSE001) opened on:19 May 2020
Deadline for submitting documents for technical evaluation: 16:00 BST on Tuesday 16 June 2020
Deadline for final submission: 16:00 BST on Tuesday 7 July 2020
Supercomputing MOOC
Our 5-week online Supercomputing MOOC, developed as part of the PRACE project, started running this week. All material can be accessed for free, although there are paid options if you would like a completion certificate. See https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/supercomputing/.
Note that the MOOC is now running in an "un-facilitated" mode, so although there will be ample opportunity for you to interact with fellow learners there is no hands-on involvement from EPCC staff.
